Subject Choices

I've been really conflicted about which subjects I want to do at university this semester. I had previously been really certain that I was going to do a writing subject about genre fiction that looked really interesting. But the problem is that the majority of my writing practice has been fanfiction. I don't know if I'm good enough yet to commit to a class where i'll be expected to write original fiction with a deadline, then be expected to show it to people. I know that the solution is to practice writing original fiction more, but it's so hard to make myself do that. If I ban myself from writing fanfiction and try to only write original fiction I end up writing drastically less and less often.
I'm fine at coming up with plots, it's the characterisation that I get really stressed out about. Because I have no practice at introducing a character's personality and making the reader like my them, because in fanfiction it is assumed that the reader already knows and likes them, so it's just not a thing you need to think about much. Controlling the pacing of how quickly the reader is supposed to get a sense of who the character is stresses me out.
I don't know, I like the idea of doing a subject where I read a bunch of books and learn about writing, but I'm not sure if I'm ready. I need to decide soon.

Date: 2018-01-14 12:04 pm (UTC)Ans writing original fiction can be very difficult. I have written a few fan-fictions but that is it. Original writing I will leave to people like yourself who in time will expand on their creative abilities.

Date: 2018-01-14 12:23 pm (UTC)Does much happen on livejournal anymore these days? The main reason I made this account was because of how much I miss livejournal (I used to use it around 2006-2008). When I had a look it seemed pretty dead. Also, what fandom did you write fanfiction for? (If you don't kind me asking)

Date: 2018-01-14 12:40 pm (UTC)I wrote a few fan-fictions on CSI Las Vegas and one on an old TV series called Combat!
As I said, I will leave the original writing and fan-fictions to others!
And I loved Lord Of The Rings. I have had the series and read it for years and saw all the movies. I also am a Harry Potter fan.
I would also suggest in the future after you have people in your circle to lock your entries for privacy. It's safer and you will not attract unwanted attention.
There are several communities on dreamwidth to find friends. Check out the ones I belong to.

Date: 2018-01-14 01:07 pm (UTC)I've weirdly only gotten into Lord of The rings quite recently. I could never get through the movies as a kid, but then I re-watched them all a while ago and I really hit me what an amazing story it is. I still need to read the books though, I'm part way through the first one. Harry Potter is good. I like the movies but I've never gotten into the fandom of it. I'm probably due for a re-watch soon.
That's probably a good idea about friend-locking my blog. Right now I haven't shared anything particularly personal but I will probably switch the privacy settings as I post more. I'll see how it goes.
Thanks for the tip about the friend finding communities, I'll check that out!
